Google My Business Messaging – Google’s Answer to Facebook Messenger
This year Google started rolling out new functionality so you can message prospective customers directly from your Google My Business desktop interface.
People coming across your Google My Business profile in search results can interact with your listing in multiple ways. They can click through to your website, request directions to your business, call you directly from their phone, and request a quote for one of your services. And here is the kicker – they also have the option to message you.
Since most people search for local businesses on mobile devices, messaging has become the second most popular way of getting in touch with a company after a phone call. Previously, if you wanted to respond to messages received via your Google listing, you could only do it using the Google My Business app. From now on, you can also respond to messages directly from the Google My Business desktop interface.
This is excellent news as it makes the process of responding to messages you receive from prospective clients quicker and easier.
How to Set up the Google My Business Messaging Feature
If you’re not familiar with a Google My Business message option and can’t see the button on your listing, it is likely because you haven’t set it up. If this is the case, make sure you do it; otherwise, you may be missing out on new leads. To do this, log into your Google My Business profile. And on the left-hand side menu, click on messages. If you’ve already verified your listing, you should see a turn on messaging option on the top right-hand side corner. If so, click on it to activate the messaging functionality.
The message option button should show up on your listing profile. Shortly after that, you should download the Google My Business app on your phone.
When someone sends you a message, you will receive an instant notification. Make sure you respond to messages within 24 hours; otherwise, Google will disable the functionality altogether, and the message button will vanish from your profile. If you already have the message option turned on and want to respond to messages via the desktop interface, log into your Google My Business profile. On the left-hand side menu, click on messages; you should see the messages that Google has sent to you. The setup looks very much like an email client; select the message you want to respond to, type your response, then click Send.
And that’s it; you’re done.
Messages are becoming increasingly powerful for any business, and because of this, Google has added it as a metric in its latest Performance Report. To find out how many messages your listing has triggered, go back to your Google My Business listing. From the left-hand side menu, select the insight option.
In the dialog box that says your insights are meeting, click on the See New profile performance. Select the time you want to analyze, then right under how people interacted with you (e.g., the message option). This will tell you the exact number of messages your business has received over the period you have selected. Tracking this number over time is an excellent indicator of how well your listing is doing. If the number goes up, it is likely because your listing is more visible.
This recent enhancement to the Google My Business (GMB) platform has the potential to dominate the world of local business marketing.
